We are incredibly fortunate to have our own outdoor swimming pool at Queen Eleanor’s which enables us to swim for roughly two thirds of the school year.
Swimming lessons, which are part of the National Curriculum, take place during PE sessions. Children will need to have both PE kit and swimming costumes on the relevant days. (We suggest they have both in school every day, “just in case”).
There is also an opportunity for the children to come to a “fun” swimming session after school on a set day of the week for each year group, while the weather holds. These sessions usually start in September and are fully supervised by two staff members. The children get about 30 minutes of fun time in the pool and are dressed and ready to go home by 4.00pm. Sessions will continue even in wet weather. Each year group has a slot at the end of the day and a timetable is included below.
Monday Year 4
Tuesday Year 5
Thursday Year 6
Friday Year 3
Having our own pool, enables us to offer swimming to all children and at a considerable saving compared with other local schools who have to charge in the region of £60-80 a year for coach travel and pool hire. However, maintaining the pool is costly (heating, maintenance and chemicals are expensive) so we request a voluntary contribution from parents of £20 per child (or £30 maximum for a family) in order that we may cover our costs and continue to be able to offer swimming at Queen Eleanor’s. This payment will cover swimming for the whole of the school year until next July.
This payment will cover swimming for the whole of the school year and we would ask you to pay this contribution whether or not your child does after school swimming.
As for all school swimming sessions, children should not wear bikinis or long shorts as these do not facilitate movement through the water.
Please note that goggles must not be used in water of this depth unless specific medical needs require them. This should be supported by a doctor’s letter.
We are advised that children are able to join in swimming sessions with a verruca. However, they do need to wear a shoe from the poolside to the changing room to eliminate the risk of spreading infection.
Please send your contribution to school in a labelled envelope together with the slip found at the end of the letter available below. Cheques should be made payable to Queen Eleanor’s School Trust Fund. Collecting money via the Trust Fund enables us to claim more money using Gift Aid; thus reducing the cost to you as parents. For every £10 you give, the Government will give us another £2.50. All you need to do is complete the Gift Aid information.
