About Year 5
In Year 5 we study five exciting cross-curricular topics over the course of the year.
In the Autumn Term, the topic is called ‘The Dawn of Time.’ In this topic, the children cover a range of areas including learning about how the world was made; how volcanoes and mountains are formed; how earthquakes are caused and measured; the effect of plate tectonics and the theory of evolution. As part of their exploration into how the world was made, the children visit the Natural History Museum in London. Throughout this topic, the children conduct a range of research and investigations that explore adaptation and Darwin’s theory of natural selection. The children also explore different religious beliefs for how the world was made and explore their own beliefs.
In English this term, we encounter Professor Drake (a world famous anthropologist), we study and use his findings to learn about the features of non-chronological reports and write our own. We also study Rudyard Kipling’s Just-So stories and adapt these for a younger audience. To add some variety, we look at performance poetry and stories from other cultures.
During the Spring Term, the children explore the legacy of the Ancient Greeks. Children will learn about the origins of Olympics, the importance of democracy, the influence of Greek architecture and how the Greeks shaped the future of modern theatre, Maths and Science. The children will also study Ancient Greek beliefs by researching Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses as well as researching a range of myths. For the second half term, the children will be investigating forces in our topic ‘May the Force be with you.’ These will include: friction, gravity, air resistance and water resistance.
In English this term, the children will explore Ancient Greek Myths and use this as inspiration to write their own. To incorporate Science into our English, we write a biography on the life and findings of Isaac Newton and we also create some instructions based on our investigations into different forces.
Throughout the Summer Term, the children are immersed in the history of World War II, looking at historical documents and artefacts; interviewing relatives; reading historical fiction; and using role-play to imagine what life was really like for a child living through the war years. They also have the opportunity to participate in a residential trip to Normandy in France where the children visit various sites of historical interest to do with the D-Day landings. The children also look at the relationship between the Earth, Sun and Moon in our topic ‘To Infinity and Beyond.’
Where appropriate, we think it’s important to link all curriculum areas to our topics. In addition to the cross-curricular topics, the children also study the following areas in English: Stories by Roald Dahl, Speech Writing, Recounts, Poetic Style and Classic Narrative Poetry and Fiction.
In Maths the children study the following units each term in addition to our topic-based Maths: Number and Place Value; Addition and Subtraction; Multiplication and Division; Fractions, Decimals and Percentages; Measurement; Properties of Shape; Position and Direction and Statistics.
