MFL Curriculum Intent

The intent is that all pupils will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating. Learning a second language will also offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, others and cultural differences. They will be working towards becoming life-long language learners.

Through the Language Angels scheme, the four key language-learning skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) will be taught and all necessary grammar will be covered in an age-appropriate way, increasing in complexity. This will enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts. In addition, the children will be taught basic phonics to help them read, write and pronounce correctly. The scheme is designed to deliver the requirements of the programme of study in a motivating way through stories, songs and games. It also provides vital opportunities for intercultural understanding.

Our celebration of community languages through our Language of the Half Term also encourages an interest in languages on a larger scale. This not only provides the opportunity to celebrate the diversity of our school community but also fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.

MFL Curriculum Implementation:

Through a thirty-minute weekly lesson, all classes have access to a very high quality foreign languages curriculum using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources. This will progressively develop pupil skills in foreign languages through regularly taught and well-planned weekly lessons in French, delivered by their class teachers.

Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes, from the building blocks of language into more complex French. Lessons offering appropriate levels of challenge and stretch are taught at all times to ensure pupils learn effectively, continuously building their knowledge of and enthusiasm for French.  Stories, songs, poems and rhymes are also used regularly.  All lessons are differentiated with support resources for SEND children, as well as challenges and opportunities for learning at greater depth.

MFL Curriculum Impact:

The intended impact of the MFL Curriculum is that children:

  • are inspired by the MFL Curriculum and want to learn more.
  • show the progression in their skills, knowledge and understanding in the work in their books.
  • can discuss their learning and remember what they have learnt.
  • develop their knowledge of where different languages (home languages as well as French) are spoken in the world.
