About Year 3
Year 3 provides a fantastic springboard into QE. Our teachers liaise very closely with our feeder schools to ensure the smoothest transition possible. Our curriculum is structured to extend and enrich the learning from KS1. We encourage children to be more independent, making that step into becoming a junior school pupil!
In the Autumn Term in English we look at the genres of: character descriptions, setting descriptions, stories and letter writing. Our Maths work in the Autumn Term is based on number skills including Place Value and Addition and Subtraction. In our RE lessons we explore the questions of, ‘How can artists help us to understand what Christians believe and do?’ and ‘How did Jesus change lives and how is it ‘good news’? Our History work for the Autumn term is mostly based on The Romans with some links made to The Celts. We explore the enquiry question of: ‘How successful was The Roman Army in conquering Britain?’ To enhance our learning, we take a step back in time to visit Butser Ancient Farm, experiencing life as a Celt in the roundhouses. We hold a Roman Day which involves wearing Roman costumes and taking part in a number of Roman-themed activities. Our Art and DT work links closely to our History work including Celtic knots, Roman jewellery and mosaics. In Science, we look at the following: Skeletons and movement, nutrition and diet, food waste and rocks. In Computing, we look at Word Processing skills and Online Internet Safety.
In the Spring Term, for English we write character and setting descriptions, poetry and non-chronological reports. Our artwork involves designing and making using clay. In Maths, we continue with number work involving Multiplication and Division followed by Money, Statistics, Measurement and Fractions. In R.E, we explore the questions of, ‘What’s the Bible’s ‘big story’ – and why is it like treasure for Christians?’ and ‘How does worship (ibadah) show what’s important to Muslims?’ In Geography, we look at exploring the question of, ‘How did a small country become a big country?’ In History, we explore the enquiry question of, ‘How did our town develop?’ by studying links between The Anglo-Saxons and Guildford. In Science, we look at the following: fossils, soil and light. To link with this, we make shadow puppets in D.T. In Computing, we explore coding using Scratch and the concept of networking.
Finally, in the Summer Term we write diary entries, sequels and newspaper reports. In Maths, we continue with our work on Fractions and then investigate Shape, Measurement and Time. In R.E, we explore the questions of: ‘What are important times for Jewish people?’ and ‘Why do people make promises?’ In History, we explore the enquiry question of, ‘Why did The Vikings try to take over Britain?’ In Geography we complete work based on the question of, ‘Why is there so much life in rainforests?’ In Science, we study: plants, forces and magnets. To enhance our learning on plants we visit RHS Wisley Gardens. We link our Artwork to this Science topic by creating Batik based on drawings of plants made during our trip to Wisley. In the Summer term, we complete cooking by creating bread rolls and fruit skewers.
