PE

Intent

At Queen Eleanor’s we believe that positive experiences in physical education are very important for a child’s overall development. As recommended by the government, children have two hours of PE per week. In PE lessons, children try a variety of sports and can further their interests by having opportunities to represent the school in matches and competitions.

PE is taught by specialist teachers and coaches who aim to promote health and well-being through active participation. Alongside learning about a variety of sports, children are taught about the health benefits of regular physical activity. Lessons are adapted to meet each child’s needs and we always encourage children to be the best they can possibly be, whatever their starting point.

Implementation

The school follows the GetSet4PE scheme for learning and most lessons are taught by specialised coaches from PSD.  We ensure that children are able to participate in all areas outlined in the National Curriculum by the time they leave Year 6. During the winter term, children do invasion games, gymnastics and dance. In the Spring term, they do outdoor adventure activities and tennis. In the Summer term it's athletics, cricket and rounders.

Swimming

We are incredibly lucky to have our own heated outdoor swimming pool at Queen Eleanor's, which is used in the Summer term and the start of the Autumn term, weather permitting. The children enjoy fun swims during Golden Time as well as learning to swim in their PE sessions. Pupils in Year 5 and 6 have additional swimming lessons at Surrey Sports Park to ensure as many children as possible can swim the 25m National Curriculum requirement at the end of Year 6.

Outside Opportunities

At Queen Eleanor's we believe that all children should have the chance to represent the school at outside tournaments and fixtures. For those who are new to a particular sport, or to competition there are opportunities to attend  ‘Inspire’ events. Last year, Queen Eleanor's achieved medals in Netball and Football and also finished highly in the Sportshall Athletics Competition.

Children are selected for sporting events according to four criteria:

  1. Attending a relevant club to the sporting event

  2.  Signing up on the sheet at school (children are advised when to do this)

  3. Ability in the relevant sport

  4. A teacher offering the opportunity to the child

Assessment

We regularly assess children in each unit of work. Teachers and coaches observe the children and decide if the child is ‘Working Towards’ (WTS), ‘Expected’ (EXP) or ‘Greater depth’ (GD). In lessons, assessment also takes place through questioning, feedback and self/peer assessment.

Cross-curricular

PE as a subject links with the concept of living a healthy lifestyle which is also taught in PSHE and Science lessons. Teachers ensure that all students understand the benefits of physical exercise. According to research, children who enjoy PE lessons are more likely to continue playing sport throughout their adult lives.

Impact

At Queen Eleanor’s many children leave the school reaching expected or exceeding the National Curriculum expectations for PE and swimming. Our aim is to actively encourage sports participation so that our leavers want to continue playing sport because they have enjoyed it.
